This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
Recently immigrated students, oftentimes more than anything, need opportunities to practice skills independently while still receiving immediate feedback to their progress.
Helping ELL students become fact fluent is an amazing opportunity to allow them to feel successful at something regardless of their English proficiency.
My goal is to have enough Power Pens and Practice Cards, so that all of the 5th grade ELL students, many of whom have just recently immigrated to the United States, can each have one to use both in school, as well as at home.
These power pens and cards remove the barrier that sometimes stand between ELL students and teachers; that barrier being a language difference.
The pens will allow students to independently practice their math facts. The best thing is, it provides immediate feedback and a way that is understood in every language.
As ELL students become more fact fluent, they gain the confidence that they sometimes lack and this confidence encourages them to engage in more difficult math lessons and feel successful in the whole group setting.
My class of eager and highly competitive students will quickly becomes fact fluent and as a result, they will be much more likely to achieve the higher level math thinking that will take them far!
