My Students
I teach an incredibly diverse group of students, most of whom are college-bound, though some will enter the military or work force. They enlighten me and each other on a regular basis.
While we are a Title I school, many students are middle class, so the pressure to excel in order to obtain money for college is intense.
I listen to my students share brilliant ideas and heartwarming stories, but I also get burdened with the weights they carry with them. So many are one tragedy or overwhelming week away from a mental breakdown. That's not what being in high school is supposed to be.
My Project
So far flexible seating is off to a great start, and I could use a couple more of the floor seats due to the size of my classes and the demand for the chairs. They are deceptively comfortable and I think some of my students regret that I forced them to try a variety of options, exposing their classmates to their secret.
In addition to the environmental change of my classroom, I am also going to try to tackle some of the mental health issues that I know burden my students.
I hope to send them off to college and adult life with a toolbox of resources consisting of healthy ways for them to cope with stress, anxiety, depression, etc. Part of that will be through decompressing and letting their mind wander with coloring, understanding how specific colors can influence them, what patterns can do, and so on.
