Flood Comforting

My students need an uplifting, safe and enjoyable classroom to work in. We need basic classroom furniture such as a rug and a reading nook.

My Students

My students are funny, smart, charismatic, curious, polite kids that learn how to be responsible little leaders each day we spend together. They see school as an opportunity to be themselves while learning but more importantly, a place they feel special and loved. My kids come from low income/high poverty and don't have much.

In the flood, they lost more than a classroom, they lost their safe and loving home!

The excitement these items would bring, will truly melt my heart! I want my kids to know that no matter how many struggles they face in life, never give up and they will always come back stronger than before!

My Project

Our community and my kids have been uprooted from our school and many from their homes due to the recent flooding in Louisiana. Our school was the hardest hit in Lafayette Parish. In July I gave birth to a sweet baby girl. A couple weeks later I chose to spend countless hours and days setting up my classroom so that my other sweet kids would have an engaging, safe and exciting classroom to learn in! After our first day of school and all those happy little faces, the flood destroyed our city and our school. All of the classrooms that my coworkers and I had worked so hard in preparing have been gutted. We were divided by grade levels and forced to leave our school, our home and sent to different campuses while repair efforts at our school take place. Within 2 days the items that were salvageable in our rooms were packed, shipped to our temporary classrooms and we set up another "home" for our kids.

The excitement on my kids' faces when they walk into my classroom gives me the strength to rebuild our "home" even better than before.

I lost many items that I personally purchased for my students. It is very important to me that to have an environment which promotes creativity, curiosity, and eagerness to learn as well as a place for students to know how important and special they are. The items I am requesting will pick up the spirits of my kids and future students as well. The rug will give us a sense of family when we gather for lessons and read alouds rather than the cold floor. The reading nook and listening center will allow students to sit comfortably, get excited and enjoy reading!
