Flocabulary-Vocab With a Beat

My Students

My students attend a Title I school, so a majority of the students come from families with low incomes. Some of them are learning English as their second language and having hands-on and very visual learning experiences are best to really help them get the vocabulary necessary to be successful in school.

I have a diverse group of students that are full of excitement about learning and love coming to school!

The students I work with are full of great questions and really care about doing their best. Some of them are dealing with challenges in life, but they are all wonderful kids and a joy to work with!

My Project

Structured Vocabulary instruction is a large part of our curriculum at our school. It is especially important when students come into the classroom with limited exposure to academic vocabulary. If students do not possess the academic language that is being used in the classroom it makes it much more difficult to be successful. One possible answer to this is by utilizing the program "Flocabulary."

Flocabulary is an online program used by teachers to present academic language with a hip-hop twist.

The singing of these songs helps with long-term retention, and the fact that they are well-produced and catchy make students want to hear more. I often hear my students humming songs about similes and metaphors, or dancing to a song about decimals.

These songs can also be especially helpful to ELD (English Language Developing) students by presenting new words with context and images they are familiar with.
