My Students
My amazing middle school students are smart, creative, spontaneous, and full of a love of learning! They come to school each day with lots of questions about the world around them. Whether working on math problems or conducting science experiments, my students love to learn by doing.
Our school serves many military families from the nearby Air Force base, a Navy EOD school, and an Army Special Forces cantonment.
We are in a unique area to have military families from so many different branches of service. Because of the challenges of military life, my students are resilient and hard-working.
My Project
Inspired by Mr. York's "RVR Controllers for Women in STEM Project", I am looking forward to sharing several of the IF/THEN resources with our students. The video resources about ambassadors Catie Cuan, Ritu Raman, and Verdi Verma will encourage all of the students, especially when coupled with a challenge to build a robot that performs some actions the Mars Rover can. The profiles of women in STEM will also provide encouragement for students to challenge their preconceptions about careers in STEM and to continue working toward their goals.
As students on our three FLL teams begin to build more advanced robots for First LEGO League (FLL) competitions, they need upgraded robots.
The EV3 robots they are using now are outdated, and are being retired by LEGO. We need to refresh our FLL program with the new SPIKE Prime robot kits. The new robots will allow students to learn the new Scratch-based programming included with the robots.
Our FLL teams help promote teamwork, engineering, and science practices. They will learn to program the robot to do timed missions using different sensors. The resources will make a difference by providing them with hands-on learning.
