My students need a Flip video camera, to use outside during our environmental studies, in order to share information and experiences with other classes.
My students are fantastic kids. However with the technological age many of them do not spend time outside. They are so used to instant gratification and immediate results that waiting is a challenge for them. I want them to see all the environment has to offer them if they are patient.
We are a public but rural school in South Carolina.
74% of our district is on free and reduced lunch. Most of my students are in single parent households, and that adult is working many hours to support their family. My students love to be engaged and working on something. They do not do well when they have to sit and listen to pick up information. Therefore it is a challenge for me to always find new ways to engage and excite them in science.
My Project
I would like to add a Flip video camera to my science classroom for students to use during the class period. There are several ways to utilize this amazing resource in my classroom. During our environmental studies, students often get bored of "waiting" on the organisms to appear and not being able to see them at all. For example, my morning classes get to see more birds than my afternoon classes, and my afternoon classes experience more insects than my morning classes due to animal behavior patterns. By utilizing this simple camera, students can videotape their classes experience, and we can share it with another period so they have the same learning experience. In addition, the Flip camera can be used daily in class. When a lab partner is absent we can set up the camera to tape the lab so the absent student does not miss instruction and can see what happens during the lab rather than miss instruction.
Students need to be able to use the latest in technology in all of their classes but especially in science.
By utilizing a Flip camera, they are exposed to yet another piece of technology that scientists use today during their research. Giving them the opportunities to use new technology encourages them to be engaged in science in school where the latest and greatest technological advancements are yet to come.
