Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My fifth graders live in a primarily working class and immigrant neighborhood. Some of them are learning English as a second language, some have special needs, some are gifted, and they all love to learn. Our students are artists, athletes, writers, scientists, mathematicians, and dreamers. We empower students through project-based learning, as we integrate the arts in all curricular areas, including the humanities, history, literature, and science.

Our motto is, "The world is changing, and change starts with me." Each year we share our learning with the school community and the surrounding neighborhood, as we host student-made film festivals and project museums.

My Project

Walk into our classroom and you will see artwork everywhere. We use elements of art and design in everything we do, whether it's a project like a film or a science report that needs illustrations.

My students want to delve deeper into doing animation to express their ideas, on both paper and on film.

First, they want materials to make flip books. We are asking for post-it pads to make the books, colored pencils with a sharpener, construction paper, and various books on drawing and design. Many students would also like to make stop-action clay animation stories. We already have experience making films on an iPad, and they want to expand to animation. They will make nonfiction movies about science and history, as well as original fiction. For that we will need modeling clay to make "clay-mation" models. With your generous donation, my students will animate the world! My kids and I thank you.
