This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

For many students, the traditional classroom model of lectures in class, practice for homework does not work. In a "flipped" classroom, students are able to watch recorded lectures at their own pace, freeing up class time for richer interaction and problem solving.

The roughly seven hundred, mostly (91%) Latino students in grades 9 and 10 attend our school at the southern tip of the city of Los Angeles.

Surrounded by several refineries and the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach, the school serves a blue-collar, working class community with a substantially (70%) economically-disadvantaged population. The majority of our parents work for these industries and others in the Los Angeles industrial harbor vicinity.

My Project

My students will use the headphones to view online materials, including lectures and simulations. My goal is to individualize instruction, giving each student the assistance that he or she needs. Technology makes that possible. Students can watch recorded lectures at home, and review them in class as necessary, freeing up time to work with me and with each other. This flipped classroom model is supported by current research and will lead to deeper learning for every student.

This project will make a difference because it will enable students to take full advantage of existing classroom technology.

Currently, I have only a few headsets, which limits the number of students who can have audio content playing on their laptops. These headsets will remove that limitation.
