Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are enrolled in a science class that connects science to a particular destination. The students are expected to report on the science using video formats - a news-cast, a documentary film, or a creative drama. We need Flip video cameras so more students can be productive simultaneously.
My students possess great creative skills and this project-based class gives them the opportunity to produce something they share with our class.
Many of these students lack the economic resources to purchase basic school supplies let alone this type of technology. Most of my students are college bound, and using technology and software to complete authentic tasks is great preparation for college and the real world. They are so proud of themselves when they see what they can create. Often times, these positive experiences give them the encouragement to believe in themselves as I believe in them. They enjoy changing roles as they role-play victims of natural disasters, news anchors reporting from the scene, documentary film makers or characters in a drama. This type of class gives them an opportunity to learn science in a very different way than traditional classes provide. The level of engagement and excitement is fun to see.
My Project
These video cameras will give my students the chance to participate more fully in this project-based course. They may discover an interest in journalism or science they never realized was there. These cameras will allow my students to learn about science, geography, journalism, history and more! This course will be far more engaging and exciting when more students can participate.
This project is so important because students must be prepared for technology and software they encounter in college classes.
In addition, it provides a new way to learn, one that is fun.
