My Students

John Dewey said, " if we teach today as we taught yesterday, we rob our children of tomorrow." My challenge is to bring as much of tomorrow into the classroom today so that my students are not being left behind.

Our year round school has over 700 students.

This is twice the average size of schools in our district. Because of this, we average 1 computer to every 3 to 4 students. Of those students, I teach 36 of them fourth grade math and science. Of those 36, 1 student demonstrated high proficiency, 3 demonstrated proficiency, 14 minimal level of proficiency, and 11 demonstrated below proficiency in math. The demographics are evenly distributed in makeup for racial diversity, sex, and social economics. About one-fourth of families are military connected with family members deployed overseas. One student lives with a grandfather. In addition, 8 students receive special education services for various reasons to include speech, autism, and cerebral palsy. My students are like other children with varied interests and backgrounds. They like pizza, ice cream, movies, and sports to include karate, soccer, and football.

My Project

These laptops will enable my students to take control of their learning. They will use the Internet to access educationally approved web sites with video math and science lessons. By having students view lessons prior to classroom instruction, they learn the basic concepts, which allows them to spend more time with the teacher for higher order thinking activities. they have more time to engage in activities the encourage application of the skills. In addition, since more students will be engaged in activities applying their learned knowledge, I will have more time to assist those students needing additional time to learn the basics. Through this deeper application of knowledge, students gain a deeper understanding of content which leads to mastery learning. Another thing students learn is that learning is more than just listening to the teacher. By using the Internet, students become adept at using outside resources to learn, thus leading to the idea of life-long learning.

Do you remember when Charlie Brown was listening to his teacher and all he heard was "wa, wa, waaaa, wa?" I'm sure many of my students feel the same way.

Using the laptops to learn will change this feeling. Students need the immediate one to one experience that on-line learning provides. Students will learn based on their needs and not have to sit through lessons they already know. By using the Internet to learn, they can take charge and become responsible for what and when they learn.
