This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are hardworking young people who come largely from lower-middle-class households. Each and every day I can't help but marvel at their effort and drive to succeed. These are kids who come early and stay late multiple days a week for tutoring, clubs, sports, and other extracurricular activities. More than anything else, my students are funny, loving, respectful, appreciative, responsible, and kind.

These students genuinely deserve so much more than they are allotted by public education budgets.

I do everything I can to help these highly deserving students, but some projects are just too big to self-fund. Your assistance in supporting public school education would be greatly appreciated.

My Project

Over the past three years, I have moved my math classes towards a blended flipped learning environment in which students watch brief instructional videos that I have filmed ahead of time, freeing up class time for problem-solving and collaboration. My students have grown to love these flipped lessons, and the formative assessment data I am able to collect as they complete these lessons allows me to make informed instructional decisions regarding differentiated instruction. In 2017 and 2018, I completed Action Research projects in my setting that quantified and qualified the impact that flipped learning has in my classroom. I am a more efficient teacher, and my students learn better when I can flip my classroom 1-2 times each week.

Last year, my 7th and 8th-grade students began to create and share their own math videos for the first time.

This allowed them to grapple with academic vocabulary, gave every child a voice in the classroom, and provided students a low stakes opportunity to get feedback from their teacher and peers about their understanding of a given topic. As students got good at creating their own videos, I began to allow students to serve as the guest teacher to record some of the flipped lessons we were creating for our class.

Unfortunately, the SMART Board I was using to create math videos in my classroom has become increasingly unreliable. That is where this project comes in. While looking for a solution for our unreliable public school technology and I found a device called a pen display tablet. This tablet connects to a laptop or PC and serves as a touch screen monitor. With this pen display tablet, my students and I will be able to continue to create flipped lessons moving forward.
