My students need to be heard! I am a 2nd Grade teacher at a high-needs school facing a 91% free/reduced lunch rate with 23% of students receiving special needs services. Many of these students have rough home lives and aren't all living with biological parents or even extended family members. Having said that, many of these students don't always get a chance to have in-depth discussions at home about their education or even get a chance to express their opinions. As their teacher it is my job to help them learn but also empower them along their educational journey through life!
So many students want to share their thoughts during the day and sometimes I feel like I am leaving some of them without a voice when I tell them I must move on without fielding all their responses. They have ample opportunity to respond to different situations through journal writing, but digital storytelling with programs such as Microsoft Photostory can be so time-consuming that I can only rarely implement it in my classroom.
Based on my own experiences with Flip Camcorders, almost anyone could learn how to use one within minutes. They have simplicity with the few buttons provided, convenience in the size of the device and lack of impeding cords, and durability in the design of the device. These camcorders would make digital storytelling very simple for the students and due to the time saved using the devices, the students would surely be given more opportunities to share their thoughts, opinions, and stories with everyone else, and possibly even the world. The sky is the limit these days!
