My Students
Our students are all special needs, ages 3-21. They enjoy things all students enjoy, hanging out with their friends, listening to music, all types of books, going new places, and seeing new things.
Our students LOVE books of all kinds; we read everything and discuss what impact different stories have at different times in our lives.
As we grow up, we may find very different meanings in a childhood classic. We love books with students who look like us, but sometimes it is hard to borrow books from the public library. Sometimes we aren't very quiet or still. Some of our students struggle with mental illness and are working to use their coping skills, being able to move while they learn is helpful and allows us to quiet our minds and bodies.
My Project
Our students need flexible seating in the library to help us safely get out of our wheelchairs, to learn and practice self regulation. We will practice coping skills, self calming skills but be able to move while we learn and practice. This way we will be ready when we visit the public library, other schools and other places that use flexible seating. Movement will help our focus, while we are read to and allow our friends on the spectrum to have the needed sensory input to increase their focus while in the library.
