Flexing Our Critical Thinking Skills With Flexible Seating!
Help me give my students flexible seating options to focus on tasks and stimulates students’ sense of touch. Using flexible seating allows the students to develop critical lifelong skills, including problem-solving, flexibility, creativity, self-reflection, autonomy, and collaboration.
As a Special Education teacher, I am going to have numerous students with ADHD, Autism, Anxiety, and other behavioral/emotional disorders. Incorporating the "Wobbly Stools" into my classroom environment will allow my students to find stimulation allowing them to focus on their school work and self-regulate when necessary. When using this type of seating, it builds skills toward independent learning so they can become proactive learners instead of reactive learners. I will be redesigning the typical classroom to allow for flexible seating, therefore, adapting a change in teaching philosophy and structure. This classroom model will also include the folding cushion seats for students to use when we work on the carpet and in groups.
It is proven that teachers utilizing this style of learning will have higher levels of student engagement and a better idea of what the students are working on at any given moment.
Flexible seating, additionally, allows the students to choose, take turns, share different locations, supplies, and seating options. It's important that my students feel a sense of autonomy in their learning environment and are given every chance to succeed and meet their learning goals.
