I teach high school students who receive special education services. Many of them come into my classroom facing personal challenges daily. So many are eager to learn, but their struggles with various disabilities such as learning disabilities, emotional disabilities, Attention Deficit Disorder, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, etc. do not make them available to learn. They crave choice in their learning and want to do more than just sit in a desk in every classroom they travel to throughout the day.
My Project
I want to provide my students with choice of flexible seating options in the classroom. We often tell students what they have to learn, so it is important to let them take control of their learning environment. I currently have two standing desks and bean bags in the classroom that students use daily. With such few choices, a limited number of students are able to move around if needed. By adding a high top table, a low table to sit at on the floor, and exercise balls, the options become much more for my students. The exercise balls also add movement for my students who struggle with focus and attention.
