This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are the most thoughtful, compassionate, and inquisitive humans I know. They study historical and current events consistently and persistently question, debate, discuss, predict, and communicate their knowledge, opinions, and conclusions in a variety of ways. They are always engaging in provocative conversations about the relationship between history and their lives and do not shy away from any question or topic.
I am in awe of my students.
The vast majority of my 100+ students live at or below the poverty line. While they enter class each day as seemingly normal, happy, and energetic teens, many of their families struggle to meet basic needs outside of school. Those needs include food, clothing, and school supplies. I often provide paper and writing utensils on a daily basis just to enable students to take notes.
They deserve more than what they have, including a bright and functional classroom space.
Last June, you so graciously donated to my project in order to make new whiteboard kidney tables a reality for my kids. This year I am fundraising for several lap desks and assorted materials to allow for more beautiful and flexible seating arrangements in my classroom. Thank you!
My Project
Students work, think, and learn in different ways. These supplies will allow for more freedom of movement and flexible seating in my classroom to stimulate thinking, growing, and learning.
If my students have the opportunity to work at spaces other than a desk, they can move and think more freely.
The lap desks, chair, and cork boards will provide them with the ability to immerse themselves in their writing in a space of their choice, as well as to sort out and pin up their ideas so they are visually represented.
While many students work well in a group, some need to work individually. This can be hard to do in a class of 30 students. The lap desks help students grab a chair and work anywhere when they need that alone time.
