My Project
My classroom serves a diverse group of students with varying needs, and it is essential that we create an environment where they can focus, engage, and thrive. Some of the students in my special education classroom experience challenges such as attention and sensory issues. Traditional classroom seating is not always conducive to their learning. Flexible seating helps promote self-regulation, reduces distractions, and increases focus while decreasing frustration and negative behaviors and increasing learning. By offering a variety of seating choices, we can accommodate their unique needs and create a space that encourages engagement, productivity, and comfort.
This project aims to enhance our classroom by introducing flexible work spaces such as; an exercise bike desk, a standing desk with a swinging footrest, a standing desk with a walking pad, and a balance board.
These options are designed to give students the freedom to move which is necessary for their self-regulation and ability to focus while also allowing them to remain engaged in learning and remain on task. Items such as the visual timers and needoh balls will help them monitor their own time on task and increase focus during lessons and instruction which require increased stamina.
The flexible workspaces will transform our classroom into a dynamic, student-centered learning environment. With the ability to move freely and select their preferred seating, students will experience fewer distractions and be able to focus better on lessons. This change will positively impact their academic success, behavior, and overall well-being. Furthermore, this approach to classroom design will teach students how to advocate for their own needs and develop skills that support independence and self-regulation.
