Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The moment the students enter my class, I am greeted by big smiles and lots of hugs. I encourage the students to foster relationships to build a community instead of just a classroom. I thrive on nurturing peer relationships that enhance my students’ education. Since much of the day is spent in small groups either working on learning centers or completing projects, these relationships are imperative.

I am a firm believer in educating the whole child.

Students aren’t only scholars; it is important that their knowledge grows beyond the books. In our class, we love planting and taking care of our garden and visiting art museums. Our latest project is building solar ovens. These activities aren’t necessarily the norm, but they are experiences and skills the students will use forever.

I work in a Title I school, where the population is 100% free/reduced-price breakfast and lunch. While the area is rather impoverished, the community has rallied together behind the students. We are the only school in our district that has an extended school day. We get to be with our students an extra hour every day to offer them intense interventions that suit each student’s needs.

My Project

It's a fact that not all students learn in the same way. When working in a classroom of students with various needs, we need to work to work to meet these needs in every way possible. Having students with sensory issues and/or ADHD and giving them a choice of how and where they want to work helps keep them engaged and empowers them to make decisions about what helps their growing minds concentrate and learn.

These materials will give my students the option to work standing up at tables with the support of a tall stool to lean or sit on or allow them to choose to use a yoga ball chair to help them with their wiggles while still allowing them to focus on their work.
