Remember the days when desks were placed in straight rows and you were expected to sit in your chair for hours on end? Sitting at a desk is not what is best for all students. How would you feel if you were able to choose a spot that fit your learning style and if you had flexibility in your choices?
First grade is a year of exciting growth and discovery!
Students are curious and eager to learn and to share. First graders are also very active and fidgety and as such need flexible options that are conducive to their learning.
We are a classroom of 17 first graders who love to come to school. We work, learn, and play together. We love to read, problem solve, and share our learning with each other and the world. We actively engage in learning together as a whole group but also break off to work independently, in small groups, and with our learning partners. We utilize technology to create, show what we know, and to share our learning beyond the walls of our classroom on a daily basis.
My Project
Flexible seating isn't new to us. Our classroom is already set up so that students have choice in their learning and are able to work in locations that fit their learning style. Being able to choose our own spots is important and empowering to us. We have made modifications to our learning environment such as raising a table to standing height, lowering another for students who would like to sit on the floor, and having several crate stools that I have made for students to use. These options are all being used daily but I find that my more active students are still struggling. Having Wobble chairs and Wobble cushions will give more options to these children while providing them the sensory stimulation they need to be actively engaged in their learning. Clip boards will also allow students to be more mobile with their learning and open up even more options for their learning styles.
Being able to offer additional flexible options for my active learners will enhance their success in our classroom.
Wobble stools and cushions will help give students choice while promoting their independence and increased focus all while allowing their bodies to move.
