Flexible Seating=Engaged Learners!

My students need flexibility and a choice in where they learn within our classroom. This gives them a chance choose where and how they would best learn without being confined to a traditional desk and chair.

My Students

My students are amazingly sweet children who are exceptional learners that love learning in unconventional ways. We are located in a rural part of the community in a Title 1 school in which more than 70% of our student population receive free and reduced lunch.

During the course of the day, we are in our classroom approximately 270 minutes and during that time many of them love to learn while sitting on the floor, all around the classroom.

Our class is one of the inclusion/co-teaching classes in third grade. We embrace all learning styles in our classroom and allow them the flexibility to sit where they feel the most comfortable.

Many of our students come from low income families. We try to make the classroom something that they know belongs to them. I always want them to have a sense of ownership and pride in their classroom and to provide them with the most conducive environment to learn and grow in.

My Project

I want to provide my students with other options of flexible seating other than simply sitting on the floor. I not only want them to have a choice, but to be comfortable as well.

My students get to make very little choices in their daily live, this is one choice that I could provide for them each day.

By providing a variety of flexible seating, I am giving them the power to make a choice in their learning and to motivate them to become engaged learners. My students will be able to make a daily choice of where and how they would like to learn in our classroom.

Research shows: Simple in-class activities can boost performance. Studies suggest that children who participate in short bouts of physical activity within the classroom have more on-task behavior, with the best improvement seen in students who are least on-task initially. Matthew T. Mahar, et al.
