This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
It is my first year as a third grade teacher. I work at a Title I school in a low socioeconomic area, and 100% of our students receive free breakfast and lunch. For some of our kids, these are the only two meals they have in a day.
Although some of my kids face many challenges, they are always eager to learn.
We are also three miles away from Ft. Bliss, so we have some military families in our school as well. Our school is located in a border city, and a few of my students moved here from Mexico and are English language learners. I'm always looking for innovative ways to teach my kids and encourage them to love school and learning.
My Project
Flexible seating will greatly reduce the amount of outbursts and severe behaviors in our classroom.
Students will use the comfy floor seat to read and relax.
So far, flexible seating has helped our students immensely with their literacy skills. They need excellent reading abilities to succeed in the world, and right now they lack these. I have third graders reading at the kindergarten levels. This needs to change!
Students will sit on couches while they are working on assignments. Some of my students have ADHD, so they need to constantly be fidgeting/moving around. The pedal exerciser requires a battery, which is why I'm requesting some.
I teach literacy, social skills, and financial literacy through our school store to our elementary students. Additionally, financial literacy starts with literacy. These seats will help my student's literacy improve, and thus their performance in other subjects will become better.
