My Students
The students in my room are a diverse group of gentlemen who share one common interest: their love of learning. This year, we are embarking on our first experiences together as a class community. Despite facing daily challenges, my students deserve the opportunity to come to school and learn something new every day!
My goal is to instill a lifelong love of learning and have my students develop the appropriate skills (social, emotional, and academic) in order to be successful.
The students in my room need to develop appropriate coping skills in order to address behavior concerns. By modeling appropriate coping skills and building a positive community, I believe these students will have the same opportunities available to them as their non-disabled peers.
My Project
I am trying to encourage a greater sense of community, collaboration, and choice within my self-contained Emotional Support classroom. Flexible seating has been identified as a way to benefit classrooms in six key areas: community, choice, collaboration, movement, comfort, and sensory input. When students are uncomfortable, they are distracted and unproductive. Comfortable students are believed to be calm, attentive, and productive. Flexible seating is believed to stimulate students' senses. This can help children focus and process information. I believe that children learn when they have control over their environment. The addition of flexible seating in our classroom will allow students to change their position and seating in the classroom as needed. The addition of the ball chairs and bands will give students the option of flexible seating choices throughout the school day.
