My Students

Our sixth grade class is departmentalized, so that students have two teachers. I teach them Language Arts and Social Studies while my partner teaches them Math and Science. We share a classroom and both teach half of the day. All of my students are excited for the opportunities our school is going to provide for them as they approach middle school. My students were selected through a competitive lottery system. Our school has a waiting list of many families because of our core values, high expectations and our positive reputation in the community.

My Project

At the current time, my students have what you might think of as "typical middle school desks" - you know the kind with the chair attached and a little basket underneath. These desks are horrible for collaborative learning. We are unable to form groups and arrange the desks throughout the room to help promote collaboration.

With this project, I will be able to begin creating a flexible seating environment in my classroom.

I am excited to start eliminating some of the current desks and add a variety of types of chairs, tables, and other seating options for students to choose from. Students will not be assigned a specific desk to learn from. They will have the option of strategically choosing a learning space that works best for the type of learner they are and the specific learning they will do.

I will be using this DonorsChoose project as a starting place for seating options but will also be looking for other options at garage sales, Goodwill, and through friendly donations. I'm hoping to fully eliminate the horrible desks we currently have and provide students with many options that provide better opportunities for their learning!
