My Students
In my Title 1 school all students receive free breakfast and lunch, and many come from low socioeconomic backgrounds.
That does not mean that they cannot learn or make progress. They just need an extra push and people who believe that they can succeed. My upcoming 4th Grade English Language Arts departmentalized classes of approximately 44 students will partly consist of ESE and ELL (English Language Learners) students.
In years past I have always just had my students sit in a chair and would become frustrated when they were off task. Four years ago I discovered the benefits of alternative seating.
My Project
The main goal for flexible seating in my classroom is to accommodate my students' learning styles and give them the freedom to choose how and where they sit while being engaged in learning. I have already seen the benefits and advantages of providing the students with seating choices using other types of alternative seating. I watched as several of my students who typically tapped their pencils, hummed, looked around the room, and disturbed others transform into focused, engaged, and eager learners.
My students will be able to choose from stools or wiggle seats (stability discs) allowing them to pick what fits their learning style best. The stools will be used at my small group table or they can replace their chair with a stool during the day. The wiggle seats will be available for the students to use around the room to complete assignments, read books, or play learning based games on a tablet. They will be trained how to safely use the flexible seating. I am confident that when the students choose where they want to work they will become more focused and independent.
