Flexible Seating to Flex Our Brain Muscles

Help me give my students flexible seating to promote fun with learning in a calm and relaxed environment when we go back to in-person learning.

My Students

I am an ESL teacher at an elementary public school in Memphis, TN. I used to teach K and 4th grade, but, just recently, 5th grade was added to my workload. My students are so dear to me, and I strive to cultivate relationships with each family.

What I love about my students is that even with the challenges we face during online learning, they still show the same enthusiasm and zest for knowledge as they did when we were learning in-person.

We started off with virtual learning in the fall. However, that will all change in January 2021. Some of the students and I are returning to school in-person while the other students will stay home for remote learning.

We have yet to see what hybrid instruction will look like for us for the second semester, but we are all feeling positive about learning amidst all the changes we have to adapt to.

My Project

My classroom is a converted conference room, making it half the size of a regular classroom. With this, I am currently using a combination of irregular sized desks and chairs that may work for kindergarten students but not for 4th and 5th grade students and vice versa. There is no space to move around when all students are in my classroom.

Flexible seating will create a fun learning environment and promote calm and relaxation for students.

Flexible seating will also allow me to maximize classroom space to include learning centers, which students really enjoy going to. These learning centers will enable me to group students according to their learning proficiency and promote accountability for their own learning.
