Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I teach at a Title I school with many students who have varying sensory needs. We have access to little funding, especially for our students with disabilities, and are unable to provide the resources many of our students need to participate in the total school environment. Many students, with and without disabilities, struggle with remaining focused in school including remaining seated for periods of time.

Flexible seating options provide an equitable option for students with sensory needs, allowing them means to release extra energy and focus on their instruction.

Currently, I have 31 students across K-5th grade on my EC caseload, as the only EC teacher at my school. Many times, these students with sensory needs are overwhelmed in the classroom and/or have an excess of energy that causes them to lose focus during instruction, often leading to disengagement and thus lack of learning. These sensory needs often hinder their participation and can cause disruption to themselves and their peers by causing them to become dysregulated and frustrated.

These flexible seating options will help to create a calmer and more controlled environment, allowing these students to better focus on tasks, manage sensory overload and minimize distractions of themselves and to their peers, ultimately improving their ability to learn and participate in classroom and school-wide activities.
