This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach 130 students at a Title I and AVID middle school on the south side of Chicago. Our middle school is departmentalized and this is the first year these fifth grades have experienced switching classes for each subject, which can be very overwhelming. Most students come from low income households, so I want to create a space where they can enjoy learning about Social Studies in a safe, comfortable classroom.
My students rotate classes six times throughout the day, so they can become quite restless.
By giving them flexible seating options, they are able to read, write, and discuss with their groups in a more comfortable environment. They love working in small groups, and sharing their thoughts and ideas with each other. By giving them the opportunity to have comfortable, flexible seating, it will hopefully encourage them to work to their fullest potential.
My Project
Flexible seating will allow my students to take charge of their learning and make the choices that work best for them. My students are noticeably more engaged in their work and less disruptive of their peers when they are given a choice of where to work. Since my students complete a lot of work in small groups, they move their desks around the room, or find a spot of the cold tile to work. My goal is to give them the option to sit in bean bag chairs, on floor pillows or in comfy floor seats while working in small groups or independently. Donating to my project will bring so much joy to my students, which will bring so much joy to me while we work together
