My Project
Before I started my teaching career, I was a practicum student in a 4th grade classroom and in that classroom, there were only two traditional classroom chairs. The rest of the seating options were flexible: bouncy balls, floor seats, rockers, and standing tables. From that experience, I vowed that I would have many options of flexible seating in my classroom just like my cooperating teacher.
This past year was actually my first year in the classroom and having flexible seating was truly transformational and eye opening.
It was very interesting seeing what seat my students would pick for the day. At the beginning of the school year bouncy balls were a big hit, but by the middle of the year, some students recognized that the bouncy ball just did not work for them.
Over the years of working with children, I have found that students thrive in settings where they can make choices and have control over their learning experience and environment. I want students to have autonomy on their choice of seating especially if it keeps them engaged and focused! Who says you can't wiggle and learn at the same time? Traditional seating is no longer conducive in a modern classroom and that is why I am asking for more flexible seating options for my students. I would like for my students to have a standing desk, desk kick bands, and some wheely chairs. I want my students to have choices!
