My Students
As a second grade teacher in a school whose socioeconomic status is changing, my second grade students face many challenges. My goal is to provide them with the best learning environment to help them meet these challenges, as well as address their many different learning styles.
My second grade students are energetic and excited about learning.
They love to learn new things, have hands-on experiences, and be comfortable while they learn. As seven- and eight-year-olds often do, these students often need to move in order to maintain focus on their work. They are often more comfortable lying on the floor, or kneeling, or even standing while working. I have found that each child needs something different in order to attain their best. With this campaign, my goal is to provide that "something different" to each student.
My Project
We all learn in different ways. Some of us need a still, quiet environment in order to learn. However, many of us require movement, or are comfortable in different ways rather than in a traditional chair and desk. These supplies will help create a classroom where students are allowed choice and flexibility with the seating options in order to help them focus. Some of the immediate benefits to flexible classroom seating are that students are burning calories, using up excess energy, improving metabolism, increasing motivation and engagement, creating a better oxygen flow to the brain, and improving core strength and overall posture. It's no surprise that physical activity is linked to higher academic performance, better health, and improved behavior.
Adding flexible seating like stools and balance balls to my second grade classroom is another step towards 21st-century learning in a fast-paced world.
When I look at meetings that take place outside the office, I see people in coffee houses sitting on all different types of seating, with the ability to choose which type of seating they would like and the freedom to change that seating. These are the workers of today: flexible, problem-solving, creative.
While there are still those that will choose the traditional desk and chair, flexible seating will help facilitate learning for those who are in need of other options. When students sit on stability balls, both sides of their brains are working on keeping their bodies centered on the balls. When the brain is stimulated, it's more focused on learning, helping students to process new information and to concentrate. Wiggle stools and seats work in much the same way, but provide more or less movement for students' individual movement needs.
Thank you in advance for helping to bring our classroom into the 21st-century and making our classroom a healthy place!
