My Students

Our school serves students from transitional kindergarten through 5th grade. The student body includes about 450 students altogether. The student body is widely diverse, and 55% of the students come from low-income families. Our school is a Title l school.

My fifth grade class includes 35 fabulous learners.

Our classroom setting includes students with different interests, experiences, learning styles and needs.

We strive to create a comfortable school environment in which students look forward to coming each day to develop their academic and social skills.

My Project

This year I am eager to incorporate some new flexible seating options into my 5th grade classroom. Many of my learners choose to work on the ground. Lap desks will allow them to remain comfortably seated on the ground while they work independently and in partnerships. Stools will allow students to sit around tables to collaborate without having to drag chairs across the room.

We anticipate having 35 students this year, which means that flexible seating is essential to maximizing both space within the classroom as well as productivity.

The addition of these lap desks and stools will allow students to navigate the different areas of the classroom and find a spot that works best for them as they complete assignments.

In an effort to promote independence and self-advocacy, flexible seating is the perfect way to support students as they practice decision making and identifying preferences. These are skills that will prove essential as they transition to middle school next year!
