My Students
I am blessed to teach and work at A.L. High School, a 103 year-old, urban, comprehensive high school in Tacoma, WA. It's a high need school, populated by 1500 energetic, curious, passionate and amazing students from the South End and Eastside of Tacoma.
As a staff, we have created a schoolwide culture focused on post-secondary and life success.
We actively teach our students to transcend the stereotypes that society has about them based on their race, income level and documentation status. We're a school on the rise: our graduation rate has gone from the mid 50s to the 80s over the last decade; over 40% of our students are enrolled in Advanced Placement classes. Last year 100% of the seniors in my advisory applied to and were accepted into military service, a vocational school, community college or four-year university.
My Project
Students are able to learn best when their basic life needs are met and when they are in comfortable surroundings.
I am requesting stand up desks and Active Learning Stools to help provide flexible seating options for my students, who last year varied in size from 4'7" to 6'8".
Many of my students work in the evening and come to school exhausted. Others are athletes and need to stand up, move and wiggle. Some just like to move. Other students, especially those who are in the drumline or musically inclined love to bounce and sway.
Last year, I jerry-rigged a standing desk for a young lady. It was a hit and several students in other classes wanted to use it. I want to provide my students with a comfortable learning environment which promotes focus and improves engagement.
