Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach in a very low socioeconomic area, where more than 99% of the students receive free or reduced priced lunch and 70% of the students are ELLs. My classroom is an inclusion classroom with a mixture of students with special needs and students who are ELLs (English Language Learners.)

I have a classroom of 4th-grade learners who love learning.

For many of these students, their first, and sometimes only, exposure to reading and learning happens in our classrooms. They can enjoy and embrace the love for learning in a safe, and comfortable environment.

My Project

Students have now returned to school at 100% capacity, but the standard classroom is not in place. Students continue to stay isolated at individual desks, which is NOT an ideal learning environment.

With these flexible seating options, students will be able to comfortably sit around the classroom and engage in collaborative groups, while maintaining social distancing guidelines.

These new chairs are designed to be cleaned quickly and efficiently, which will make group rotations possible. Students will have a choice of which seating options they prefer, and will be able to sit in various areas of the classroom that will get them away from their boring desk. They will love the added incentive to work while sitting comfy!

This will keep students engaged longer, and able to work collaboratively while staying safe. One of the areas our students missed out on the most during the pandemic was in the area of their social and emotional learning. Flexible seating provides the opportunities for our students to work together as they rebuild their social and emotional skills.
