My students need flexible seating options to maximize classroom performance by increasing blood flow to the brain, while also increasing metabolism, using up excess energy, and giving them the responsibility of choosing their own seating.

My Students
As a teacher in a Title 1 district, my students come from several diverse backgrounds. Living in a small town with with only one school district means that my student's socioeconomic backgrounds range from very low income to very high income. This makes it a little more challenging to meet everyone's needs.
I use positive reinforcement in my classroom in order to focus on the good things my students are doing.
Although some of my students may be extremely different from one another, they are able to show respect for each other when they enter our room.
I want school to be a place where every student feels safe and equally valued no matter what their life at home may be like.
I always tell my students that we are a family and we have to care for one another. When I see them forming new relationships with peers, doing the right thing in difficult situations, or even just helping a neighbor out on a difficult math problem, it makes me proud to be their teacher.
My Project
Research shows that increased physical activity is linked to higher academic performance, better health, and improved behavior. Today we expect more of our students than ever. Recess and P.E. times have been shortened, and instruction time has been maximized. So many of our students suffer from ADHD/ADD, and yet we expect them to sit still for multiple hours out of the day.
With flexible seating options for my students I am looking to increase student engagement while also getting those wiggles out!
I have noticed that I have several students who tend to get up out of their seats constantly, lean back on two legs of their chair, or sit up on their feet while in their chair. With flexible seating I am hoping to reduce some of these behaviors. The stools and yoga balls will be used at regular height tables. The wobble cushions will be used in student chairs or at a floor table. Students will be able to try out different seating options until they find what works best for them.
I have had the privilege of observing classrooms where flexible seating has been implemented and I was blown away by the results. Where some may think that students would be distracted or argue over seating options, what I have observed is a more student driven environment with maximum engagement. Being a first year teacher I do not have the resources to fund this project on my own, but with a little help I know my class could thrive.
