Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students walk into our classroom smiling, excited and eager to learn every morning! They look forward to the challenges that face them academically but most importantly, how to figure out a way to solve them productively. This year more than ever, my students have shown respect towards one another understanding that we are different, but we smile in the same language. They have learned their friends languages to greet one another. There is nothing more beautiful than listening to a Chinese student greeting the class by saying 'buenos dias' or a Spanish student greeting friends in Polish! For every birthday, we sing Happy Birthday in Chinese, Spanish and English! Even though they are on different levels academically, they share some similarities.
They are all ENL students (English as a New Language).
They are learning English together while remembering their native languages and cultures. The school I work at is a title 1 school and all students receive free breakfast and lunch.
My Project
Learning in a classroom occurs in various ways! Throughout my years teaching, I've realized that students work best in their comfort zones. When given the opportunity to explore different seating options for learning students understand that their needs are respected and valued!
While some of my students need a stable work area, others need movement to help increase learning.
Providing my students with balance balls and wobble chairs will give them the learning environment many need. If they feel the need to move, they are given that option. Having a collaborative floor work space will allow them to work better in groups and to help one another with tasks.
Flexible seating for all will make a huge difference in the academic learning for students, build a positive classroom community and increase social skills!
