My Students
My students are English language learners who are eager to learn and explore the world around them. I teach at a Title 1 school in Brooklyn where all students receive free breakfast, lunch and basic school supplies.
Most of these students do not have opportunities to leave their neighborhood, and live in crowded apartments where they lack personal space.
My hope is to provide a classroom environment in which students feel comfortable, learning in the mode and location of their choosing.
My Project
In our classroom, students are usually engaged in group work and partner work, where they are encouraged to sit any way they feel comfortable. As of now, I have created a few flexible seating options for them, including some small benches I made, donated rocking chairs, pillows to lean against and rugs.
My hope is to provide students with more seating options in which they feel excited to learn and engage with their peers.
And since I have a particularly energetic class, what better way to keep students focused than with wobble stools and stability balls? I can't wait to see the looks on their faces when they enter our room filled with flexible seating options!
