This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I have the privilege of working at a charter school in the San Fernando Valley that promotes leadership among our students through service-learning projects and studying the contributions of inspirational world leaders.
The student population is reflective of the surrounding community.
It is a low-income school with a high percentage of students that qualify for free or reduced lunch. Many of the students are English Language Learners (ELLs). The school offers an inclusive special education program to ensure we are meeting the needs of all students.
In addition to fostering leadership skills in our students, we develop the students' social and emotional skills through the use of animals, such as therapy dogs. The students that I work with are creative, bright, and eager to learn.
My Project
Giving my kindergarteners choice about how and where they work will optimize their learning experience. Think about how you best learn. Are you always sitting in a chair at a desk or do you prefer to work in a more comfortable position? The flexible seating options that I am requesting will allow my energetic five-year-olds to take ownership of their learning and think about what they need to focus on and learn. These specific seating options will allow them to move and burn excess energy while simultaneously concentrating on their work.
Giving students choice and flexibility in their learning environment encourages independence and reflection at a young age.
I want to provide all my current and future students the opportunity to make choices about how they best learn. Some will choose to work in a collaborative group, while others will prefer to work in a quieter, more private environment. Some students will choose to sit on a wobble stool at their desks or a bubble cushion on the carpet, while others may want to be more mobile with a clipboard. No matter what seating option they choose, I want them to learn to take responsibility for their learning.
