Help me give my students with autism a "Calming Colors" bean bag and a large pillow in their "calm-down corner" to help them regain their emotional and physical control.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
My students with autism are attending school for the first time in a newly opened Flexroom! This space is designed for students who struggle with self-regulation in the general education setting. One way to help children learn how to self-regulate is by providing them with calm-down corners. Our Flexroom will have a “calm down corner”. A calm down corner is a designated space in a classroom with the sole intent of being a safe space for a child to go to when they feel their emotions are running too high and they need to regain their emotional and physical control.
Calm down corners help children to practice identifying feelings and emotions to better manage stress, self-regulate, and control their impulses.
Having a space designed to support them emotionally and physically helps them feel safe and comfortable, allowing them to get ready for learning. The Lakeshore "Calming Colors" bean bag and pillow will offer my students a space in which they’ll feel safe recognizing and regulating their emotions in a healthy way.
