Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

In my classroom flexible seating options give my students a choice in what kind of learning space works best for their brain and their body. This helps them collaborate, communicate, and engage in critical thinking skills. The result is happy and engaged students who love school and learning.

I teach 5th grade at a Title I school in Galt.

My students come from a high poverty community, and some families are migrant farmers in the area. Many students speak English as their second language. School is the safe place where they receive structure and an education. Our school district is run on the motto "Growing and Learning Together". I am working hard at bringing my classroom into the 21st Century so that my students will be prepared to grow and learn for their best possible bright future. In addition to homelessness and poverty, many of my students have learning challenges. mI teach general education, learning handicapped, autistic, RSP, students with ADHD, and GATE. I want my classroom to feel safe, provide the home feeling some of my students desperately want, and to also be flexible for diverse learning needs. My goal is to create a classroom that has comfortable seating, but also seating that meets the needs of learners as students do not learn all in the same.

My Project

Flexible seating is a new approach in teaching, and has become extremely popular in the last couple years due to the effectiveness it has on students engagement and motivation. Flexible classrooms give students a choice in the kind of learning space that works best for their bodies and brains. In my classroom, we have begun this transformation already with Bouncy Bands, wiggle seats, and yoga balls. Hokki Stools will add another option to what I have already added to my classroom. Not only does seat choice motivate and engage students, but it has been proven to improve students' grades and create happier and more productive students. Students who were once disengaged and waiting for the class period to be over are now collaborating with their peers and adding to classroom discussions!

This project will touch the lives of hundreds of students.

Not only will my homeroom class of thirty benefit from this project, but it will also affect sixty other children who see me during the day for enrichment or math instruction. The quality of the Hokki stools will also last for many years to come, allowing many students to experience flexible seating options that may not have it in their homeroom class. I am excited to create a learning environment that meets the needs of all diverse learners.
