My Students
My students are from the Bronx, NY. They come from low income families. Our school gives children from all cultures, areas, and various incomes an opportunity to learn and thrive. My goal this year is to provide my students with a classroom environment that is loving, and nurturing. I care about my students' needs. I think a classroom that supports all learners is crucial. Flexible seating is an option I would love to provide for my students. When students are comfortable and have a voice, they will learn.
My Project
Flexible seating allows students to take charge of their learning and make the choices that work best for them. During independent work times they choose a location in the classroom that works for them. Last year my students experienced difficulty working at their desk and remaining on task. When I visited other classrooms, I saw students engaged, comfortable and working in a variety of locations. If I was able to incorporate flexible seating in our room, my students would have the option to work at tables, with clip boards on the rug, bean bag or chair at the back table. Making sure students are comfortable is an essential component in motivating them. I have noticed amazing differences in my students when they are given a choice in their seating. They almost always make good choices about where they sit, are more engaged, and get more work completed than when they are just sitting at their desk.
