My students need alternative seating options to increase their focus and attention during learning activities. These seating options include sensory carpet sitting pads and storage bins that will transformed into individual work stations.
As a teacher working in a low socio-economic neighborhood, my students are faced with daily challenges that affect them in unimaginable ways. The frustrations of home life are brought into the classroom and bring a new dimension of socio-emotional learning. As a teacher, I do my best to teach meaningful and creative learning experiences that bring happiness and purpose.
Our classroom is comprised of 10 students at a kindergarten or first grade level, all of whom have various special needs and require a little extra love and attention to thrive.
These students have worked so hard to make it this far, but unfortunately, many of these students are still behind compared to their peers. My goal as their teacher is to give every student the resources they need to close this gap and give the students an opportunity to learn to love learning.
My students love to learn and are very curious individuals who ask many, many questions. My students love to move around, explore, dance, and be silly. My students love to feel proud of their work. My students are eager to develop new skills, but sometimes need a little more help to achieve their goals.
My Project
Many of the students in my classroom are hyperactive or have difficulty focusing during instruction due to their disability. Students are frequently fidgeting, getting up out of their seat, and getting distracted by the close proximity of other students at their tables. These distractions are causing some students to fall behind.
With flexible seating options, students are given an opportunity to feel more comfortable in the classroom environment, which in return, will result in more attention on instructional lessons.
The lack of resources in a school should not be the reason that students with disabilities are falling behind.
Our class has had a trial with some flexible seating and it has unbelievably changed the work produced by the students and want to make these resources available to all the students in the class who can use these supports. This grant will help our class get closer to reaching our academic goals and hopefully begin to close the academic gap that these students face.
