My Students
We are an 8:1:1 self-contained classroom in a specialized school district in New York City. All of the students are on the autism spectrum, and several are also English Language Learners. They are proud to experience the world in unique ways.
My class loves exploring new ideas and places.
They are inquisitive and excited about learning new things.
Our class members are all learning how to appropriately socialize and interact with their peers and adults. These boys are eager to participate in interactive, hands-on opportunities throughout the classroom and school community.
My Project
In our classroom, we have a variety of learners, many of whom prefer non-traditional seating choices. When completing independent work or reading on their own, the students are allowed to choose where they sit. By giving them access to flexible seating choices, we ensure that they are comfortable and focused on what they are doing.
Our flexible seating options could really use an upgrade!
When we listen to read alouds, the class comes to the back of the room and chooses a comfortable spot in our reading/calm down corner. This part of the room is also used when students are overwhelmed and need a break, or need a quiet space to complete their work.
