Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are 21st Century learners, who are eager to use all of the technology available to them! I teach 24 curious, natural born, third-grade scientists in a small, Title I school that has an amazing and supportive principal.
My students are eager to learn, and their brains are sponges that absorb any and all information given to them.
Everything is a potential investigation or experiment to them so I strive to provide my students with as many learning and project-based opportunities as possible.
I constantly enhance the school curriculum and students' intrinsic motivation to learn more by infusing STEM correlations whenever possible.
Because of our small school size, funding levels are not as high as other schools in our area. Grants and projects like this one become an integral part of how I obtain resources to supplement learning experiences. I truly believe that the future lies in our children, that they have virtually unlimited potential, and my job is to enable them to reach it.
My Project
The students in my classroom participate in problem based learning experiences that are hands-on and cross curricular. They solve problems, conduct investigations and make presentations to their peers often and engage in a "Science Question of the Week" as part of their weekly homework assignment. Every month, my students make a list of questions and wonderings they want to investigate and together, we pick one per week for my students to complete. This is a family project, as students are encouraged to work with their parents to do the experiments/investigations at home, and bring their results to school at the end of each week.
On Friday's, we have our "Science Convention", where students discuss their findings with each other.
Parents are welcome to participate as well! The desks in our space currently don't lend themselves for group facilitation and participation. The materials in this grant will provide my students with the space and flexibility to not only display their projects, but provide flexible seating options for classroom discussions and parental engagement. The tables requested will help these events flow and be successful for both students and their families.
