My Project

Many of our students struggle fiercely with the traditional classroom setup, and when it comes to focused reading, comfort is everything. Though certainly bold, removing the desks from our ELA classroom has proven to be a benefit for students. The hard plastic chairs are my next target - floor cushions w provide students control and freedom of movement for group or solo activities, and can open up seating formations that traditional chairs cannot accomplish. A few of our students have trouble with the hardness of the typical classroom chairs, and soft seating can double as a chair cushion for these learners.

That is all to say, middle school kids still love sitting on the floor for reading time!

The power of association is strong, and using it to help build the associations between "reading" and "comfort" is an experiment I am eager to try.
