My Students
My school is charged with educating an incredibly diverse population, including a very large group of students who are refugees. Because of our high number of English Language Learnerers and our population receiving Special Education services, many of my students are still beginning readers.
My students love to come to school, even though it can be tough for them at times.
They take their education very seriously, and have a desire to become fluent readers. My students are active, joyful, and eager to learn.
My Project
My classroom is currently a cluttered, hodge-podge of desks--some match, and some don't. I have one broken couch, a beanbag, and a few floor pillows...and those are always where students gravitate to work at those places in the classroom. My students have expressed a desire to work at tables instead of desks, and since much of our work is done in groups, it is difficult to maneuver around the classroom at times.
My students have made my classroom their home.
I want this classroom to feel more like a home and less like a classroom. By adding more tables to my classroom, with flexible seating options like: swivel stools, fitness ball chairs, and floor cushions--students will be able to pick a place to work where they can find the most success. With more flexible seating options, also comes a need for clipboards and storage baskets for a place to store them.
I'm positive that by switching out my desks for tables, and adding some more seating options...my students will find a comfortable place to work and learn.
