This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My school is a a Title 1 school. All of my students come from low-income areas and receive free lunch. Due to recent budget cuts, our school can no longer afford to buy new furniture. I currently teach my students in fourth grade and come September I am going to be moving to fifth grade with them. Unfortunately we will be moving to a room that has no student desks or chairs. Instead of getting old furniture from the building I would like us to become the first flexible seating classroom in our school.
My classroom is full of 32 diverse learners, each with their own unique abilities and learning needs.
Despite the challenges my students face in and out of the classroom on a daily basis, they still remain optimistic and eager to learn and grow. Together we work side by side to become 21st Century citizens.
My students need wobble chairs, seat cushions , seat crates, lap desks, knee mats and balance balls as multiple options for flexible seating.
My Project
Consider that students spend upwards of 6 hours per day in our classroom. Changing not just your seat, but changing the type of seat throughout the day improves focus and reduces fatigue. Flexible seating options, balance balls, lap desks, and wobble chairs, will allow me to give all students the space and conditions needed to accomplish their goals. Options for flexible seating will give my high-energy fifth grade students endless opportunities for movement in the classroom. Students will be able to take full advantage of variety of wonderful seat choices on a daily basis. I believe the opportunity for my students to make their own seating choices will not only promote student engagement, it will also help them focus in an environment where it's okay to express movement without hindering learning.
