My Students
Our school was severely damaged by Hurricane Harvey, so now we are housed at our local high school. Even before the hurricane, our students faced many adversities because of their low socioeconomic status. Many of my students families had a difficult time meeting their daily basic needs. Despite my students' obstacles, they are great kids and still strive to be successful. Their efforts are many times thwarted because we don't have a variety of instructional materials available to us. Even with the lack of basic supplies, we still strive to be the best. Hurricane Harvey hit us but it didn't kill us.
My Project
Flexible seating has many advantages in the classroom setting. Incorporating flexible seating arrangements, I expect a higher academic performance from my students since they have a choice. My students need alternate seating in the classroom to help them find a space that works best for them. The bean bags, floor pillows, rug and lap desks will make them more comfortable. When I work, I work to be comfortable and sometimes it's not at my desk. The new furniture will provide the students with a different option besides a hard chair. Many students also have attention problems, being able to move and change seating can eliminate the behavior issues that may arise.
Again, students spend so much time in the classroom and they need to be comfortable.
By allowing the students to choose a comfortable seating choice, student participation will improve with less restlessness from them. These seating arrangements will also improve their posture and allow for better attention and focus. Students are going to be more likely to learn and want to learn if they're comfortable in their classroom, both physically, emotionally and mentally. That may be laying on a rug that allow them to lay down while working, a classroom that they can collaborate, and even a spot where they can work in peace. These children will learn that a classrooms does not have to be orderly and uncomfortable. Help these students get a chance for change.
