Flexible Seating for Math and Science 4th Graders

My Students

The 4th grade at our Title 1 school is departmentalized and I have the honor of teaching approximately 50 students math and science daily. I want students to be comfortable in their learning environment, which is why I started using flexible seating this school year. My students fell in love with the seating options but they need more than just a few yoga balls and camping chairs, especially during their center rotations so everyone gets the benefits from flexible seating. My students are hard working and energetic and the flexible seating options give them a chance to use their energy in a positive manner and stay focused on the task at hand.

My Project

We all like to learn where we are most comfortable...in bed in our pajamas with our laptop, at a desk in a lecture hall or lounging on a couch. Elementary students are no different. Flexible seating gives them the opportunity to choose comfortable seats when learning the information they may see as tough. We started using flexible seating this year and the students love it. Yoga balls, camping chairs and milk crates with cushions are often the first ones to be taken. Students are more engaged and assessment scores are up, but we need more options in the classroom. I have selected wobble chairs for those students who need the movement and bean bag chairs that are light and portable throughout the classroom.
