My Project

At Wallace Middle School in Bristol, Virginia, our classroom is full of bright, curious, and energetic students navigating the complex transition from childhood to adolescence. They’re figuring out who they are, how they learn, and how to connect with others. But one thing we know for sure: traditional desks and chairs don’t meet the needs of middle school learners.

Many of my students struggle with attention, self-regulation, and emotional overwhelm during the day.

Some are neurodivergent, with autism spectrum disorder or ADHD. Others have experienced trauma or are learning to manage strong emotions through social-emotional learning strategies. For these students, being confined to a hard chair and desk can make learning even more challenging.

Flexible seating allows students to choose what helps them focus, feel calm, and stay engaged. Some students need to move while they learn. Others crave cozy, quiet spaces. Flexible options like wobble stools, bean bags, standing desks, and floor cushions give them the freedom to learn in the way that works best for them.

With your support, we will create a dynamic classroom space where students:

Choose seating that supports their learning style

Work collaboratively in small groups or independently in calming corners

Learn how to self-regulate through movement and choice

Feel empowered, valued, and included—no matter their background or needs

This project will directly impact over 100 students this year and continue to support many more for years to come. With flexible seating, our classroom becomes more than a room—it becomes a space for growth, creativity, and belonging.

Thank you for believing in public education and supporting the unique needs of middle schoolers. Your generosity will help us create a classroom where every student feels seen, supported, and ready to learn.
