Over the summer, I attended a professional learning workshop by Morningside Center for Teaching Social Responsibility. It was a rewarding training, and I learned strategies I can infuse into multiple subject areas. During the training, we sat all day in rigid industrial chairs and behind desks (that always seem to have a wobbly leg). Sitting in those typical classroom seats made me realize how uncomfortable students must be all day, and why students always run to the handful of cushions that might be available. A class set of cushions would really change the way students work in the classroom.
Flexible seating options in the classroom allow for comfortable discussions, catch-up or enrichment activities and small collaborative groups to happen more easily.
A class set of comfortable, portable, and easy-to-clean floor cushions will allow me to differentiate instruction more easily. Instead of taking the time rearrange drag heavy furniture (which makes an awful racket for the classroom below us), students can just grab a cushion and work in a comfortable spot that meets their needs.
