it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
Flexible seating provides students with the opportunity to learn in a way that works best for them. Similar to how some students are more successful with one specific learning strategy than another, students can be more or less successful depending on the seating in their classroom environment as well.
My students are very diverse learners and have many qualities that make them unique.
Because of this, my students often struggle to remain seated and successful in a traditional seating arrangement. Within the last year, I have begun to allow students to work on the floor, in the reading area, or stand next to their desks but options in my classroom are still limited. I even have one student who "adopted" my small standing desk a majority of the time. My students often have a lot of energy in their little bodies that needs to be channeled in a productive way to be successful.
My overall classroom goal is to make sure my students are as successful as possible in learning both academics and social-emotional learning skills. This goes beyond instructional strategies and encompasses the entire classroom environment as well. A popular quote from Maya Angelou is, "Then when you know better, do better". And I now know that my students are much more successful when not required to sit at their desks for the entire school day. They have shown me through the beginning of our flexible seating practices that they can and are willing to be responsible with these options in order to be able to use them.
